Ultrasound Preparation and Actual Examination

Preparation before the Examination

No special preparation is needed. Except:

Upper Abdomen examination  Nil by mouth (except for water or oral medications) for at least 6 hours before the examination.  For diabetic patients on other antidiabetic drugs, consult your physician for the adjustment of the dosage if necessary. 

Urinary Tract and Pelvis examination  You have to (1) drink at least 2 glasses of water 1 hour before the examination, and shall not urinate until the examination is completed; (2) Unless contraindicated, patient with bladder catheterized should have the Foley catheter clamped before drinking water to ensure a full bladder. 


Experience during the examination

It is a painless examination.  You are asked to position on an examination table.  A clear gel is applied to the body in the area to be examined to help the transducer make secure contact with the skin.  The sonographer presses the transducer firmly against the skin to obtain a clear image.  


After the examination

Return to normal routine.
